Alexandria feels like a different country: Mediterranean light, Greek and Roman ruins, and a Corniche lined with old cafés. We drive up from Cairo in the morning, see the catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, the Roman amphitheatre, the Qaitbay Citadel and the modern Bibliotheca, and eat fish chosen from the ice that morning.
