Luxor’s West Bank in one day

How to see the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and Deir el-Medina without melting.

K Karim Mansour 3 min read

The West Bank of Luxor holds more than anyone can see in a day. Here is how I build a day there that is rich but not exhausting.

Start at opening time

The Valley of the Kings opens early, and the first two hours are the coolest and quietest. The standard ticket includes three tombs; the tombs of Tutankhamun, Seti I and Ramesses VI need separate tickets. Which tombs are open rotates for conservation, so it pays to check that week.

Then Hatshepsut

Queen Hatshepsut’s temple at Deir el-Bahari is spectacular from a distance and fascinating up close — look for the expedition to the land of Punt on the middle terrace.

Don’t skip Deir el-Medina

The village of the craftsmen who built and painted the royal tombs. Their own small tombs are some of the most colourful in Egypt, and almost always quiet.

Finish at the Colossi of Memnon

Two 18-metre statues of Amenhotep III, all that remains above ground of his vast mortuary temple. A five-minute stop on the way back to the river.
